Cub Scout Leader Position-Specific Training: 9/15/2010 6:30 PM - 10 PM

Basic Leader Training is designed to give position-related information to all adult leaders in Cub Scouting. Building on the foundation established in Fast Start Training, Basic Leader Training goes into greater detail.

Basic Leader Training has two parts:

This Is Scouting is for all new leaders in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing. It is an online interactive learning experience that is divided into six modules. It picks up where Fast Start left off and introduces participants to the following areas of the Scouting program: Mission, Vision, and Values; Programs for All Ages and Abilities; Scouting Is Fun!; Scouting in the Community; Protecting Our Youth; and Scouting’s Legacy.

Leader Specific Training gives a leader the knowledge and skills needed for a specific position. Leader Specific Training is available for the following positions in Cub Scouting:

Tiger Cub leader
Cub Scout den leader and assistant
Webelos den leader and assistant
Cubmaster and assistant
Pack committee members
Pack Trainer

Basic Leader Training goes into greater detail on youth development and boy behavior, program planning, activities, and the purposes of the program. It is usually presented in one or two group sessions, but can be delivered to small groups or even individuals through personal coaching.

Every Cub Scout leader should complete Basic Leader Training; it prepares leaders to deliver a quality, fun-filled program. Leaders who understand the whys and hows of the program are more effective in their roles. They know how to use available resources to provide an exciting and worthwhile program for boys. Trained leaders have confidence in carrying out their responsibilities and, along with the boys, have more fun.

Youth Protection Training: 9/18/2010 8 AM - 9 AM

The Boy Scouts of America has adopted a number of policies aimed at eliminating opportunities for abuse within the Scouting program. Every adult who has contact with youth members must take Youth Protection Training.

Health and Safety Training: 9/18/2010 9 AM - 10 AM

This course is offered to all unit leaders, district staff and council staff. All leaders should receive this training every two years.

Course Objectives

To promote and achieve unit leadership understanding and acceptance of responsibility for the well-being and safety of Scouts entrusted to their care when they lead unit activities.
To introduce the sandwich principle in Boy Scouts of America safety-the critical role of qualified supervision and discipline. To identify areas of risk in Scouting activities, especially at the unit level and to define key safety procedures for each activity.
To acquaint unit leaders with Boy Scouts of America resource materials for use in planning safe Scout activities.
To inform unit leaders that the vast majority of serious injuries and fatal accidents that occur in the Scouting program happen at the unit level.

Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training: 9/18/2010 9 AM - 3 PM

Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training is for all Scoutmasters and their assistants. Boy Scout leaders also must complete Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills training to be considered fully trained.

This training is divided into four parts. The first three parts concentrate on troop operation and can be completed in one full day or three evenings. The fourth part, which focuses on outdoor skills, lasts approximately a day and a half, depending on the skill level of the new leader. The leader is considered trained upon completion of This Is Scouting, Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.

The 2010 Timberline Camporee will celebrate the Scouting birthday with “Scouting Spans the Century”! We will be offering pieces of the histroical merit badges (offered only this year) as well as merit badges that touch on all years and aspects of Scouting.
